Footnote to the Stelliscript

by Pat Tompkins

As the sun circles the flat earth,
you of the one true religion,
smarter than the dumb animals,
believer in alchemy and phrenology,
remember the fate of dinosaurs.

Regard a pinch of sand, blade
of grass, bead of water.
Listen to the wind and waves.
Melt snow in your hand.
Taste salt of tears and heat.

Question those who are sure.
A plague on soothsayers.

Pat Tompkins is an editor in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her poems and short fiction have appeared in KYSO Flash, Grievous Angel, Thema, and other publications.
